Stuck in lawyer limbo

I am a victim of domestic violence. I had to relocate my family to save my life even though I had an order of protection against my husband. He does not know where we are.

It's been three years and I recently got up the courage to divorce him. I contacted several lawyers in my new state and was told that because he lives in Florida that I needed to find an attorney in Florida.

I contacted several lawyers in Florida and they told me because I now live outside Florida, I need an attorney from my new home state. I am beginning to think that this abusive man was right in that I would never be rid of him, unless you can help solve this dilemma. Please HELP!

A.We contacted Legal Services of Greater Miami, and an attorney said that you should be able to file for divorce in your new state if you are a resident. An attorney there will be able to confirm whether you have grounds and standing under that state's law. You should also be able to request confidential filing of your address throughout the divorce process.

The attorney suggested you contact the closest Legal Aid office to help you.
