Helpful hints to protect consumers

Consumers need to be very careful when dealing with companies in the current economy.

The Federal Trade Commission recommends avoiding any companies that:

--Collect payment in advance of providing services.

--Guarantee to stop the foreclosure process.

--Warn you not to contact your lender, lawyer, credit or housing counselor.

--Accept only a cashier's check or wire transfer.

--Tell you to make your mortgage payment to it, instead of directly to the lender.

--Tell you to transfer your deed or title to it.

--Offer to fill out paperwork for you.

--Urge you to sign paperwork you haven't read or don't understand.

--Encourage you to lease your home and buy it back over time.
