Where to get new binding for old book

Q. Can you or a fellow reader help me to find a local company that repairs (i.e., re-binds) books?

Many years ago, my brother gave me a personalized, leather-bound dictionary. Unfortunately, the binding has come undone and I would love to get it repaired.

I know this question has come up before but I cannot remember any of the companies names.

A. We answered a similar question on Nov. 19, 2006. Try Dobbs & Brodeur, 1030 E. 14th St., Hialeah (305-885-5215 and www.dobbs-brodeur.com or e-mail dbbinders@bellsouth.net).

According to President Anthony Lloret, it's one of the last old-fashioned bookbinders in South Florida. Lloret owns the business with his father and two brothers.

He informed us that the company has helped restore leather-bound dictionaries in the past. It offers many additional services including book preservation, binding, etc.

Remember that all old books should be kept out of sunlight and out of high humidity and high temperatures (in other words, somewhere where the air-conditioning runs most of the time).

Make sure they're stored in a way that bugs, mice or rats can't get to them, either.

When you open an old book on a flat surface, remember to support the cover with another book, a rolled-up towel or something similar so that the stress on the spine is relieved.
