  Free tax-return transcripts

  The Internal Revenue Service has issued a new form to aid the processing of mortgage applications under the Home Affordable Modification Program.

  The new form is geared to make it simpler for homeowners trying to get a mortgage or modify or refinance a mortgage to order copies of their tax-return transcripts. Taxpayers often need copies of their tax returns when they are obtaining a new mortgage or when they are refinancing or modifying an existing mortgage.

• Are people wrongly getting exemptions?

  I am aware of several homes where the homeowners have been claiming Homestead Exemption, but have been renting out their homes since they first owned them, never having lived there. Who may I anonymously contact?

• `Results not typical' will disappear Dec. 1

  Take note, consumers:

  Starting Dec. 1, weight-loss ads can no longer feature people who've lost umpteen pounds along with the disclaimer ``results not typical,'' and bloggers who review products must disclose if they've been paid to do so.

• Look out for that big hole

  At Byron Avenue and 71st Street in Miami Beach, across from the parking space of the post office, there is a big hole on the road. Somebody can have an accident, especially at night. It is right there at the side where there are cars parked.

• Recall: Coby Electronics rechargeable batteries

  Coby Electronics is recalling 19,600 rechargeable batteries sold with portable DVD/CD/MP3 players, because the batteries can overheat, posing a fire hazard.

  The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to be wary of pervasive online ads offering the promise of a whiter, brighter smile.

  BBB has received a recent onslaught of complaints from consumers who thought they were signing up for a free trial of teeth-whitening products but were repeatedly billed for products and services they didn't want.

  SI Tech is recalling 65,000 diving air hoses for dry suits because the hose contains an insert that can dislodge during diving and restrict air flow to the diver, posing a drowning hazard.

• Reduced-fare riders get an extension

  I am a disabled reduced-fare rider with Miami Dade Transit. With the new EASY Card being implemented, I called a few weeks ago to see if I needed to do anything and if they would still accept my reduced fare ID.
