CHANGED LIFE

After serving 17 years in prison, Carlin was transferred to the center in 2000 and immediately began treatment. He says it's helped him change his life. "When I developed a conscience, it had a face, and it belonged to'' his victim, he said.

But he says that because he has been labeled a sexual offender no one believes that he can change. He now feels he's being used as a pawn in a political game.

"This facility thinks that it can force the Florida Legislature to create a less restrictive alternative if they suggest I go home," he said.

"So did they really want me to go home? No. Why? Because they were recommending me for something they knew damn well wasn't in existence."
