MIAMI-DADE COUNTY FOOTBALL
PERFECT STORM

THE BOOKER T. WASHINGTON TORNADOES WILL ATTEMPT TO ACHIEVE PERFECTION FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE SEASON BY CAPTURING THE CLASS 4A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

Speed, size, agility and versatility. The talent Miami-Dade County will be feeding major college football programs has plenty of these attributes again this year. Here is an in-depth look at 10 of The Miami Herald's top senior prospects who will strive for perfection during the 2008 season.

When last season ended, a strong case could have been made for Northwestern, Booker T. Washington and Pahokee all to be among the top five in the country. As we head toward the 2008 season, only two South Florida area teams are receiving national attention.

  NORTHWESTERN   NORTH MIAMI BEACH

The 2008 Northwestern Bulls have a message for their fans. Keep the faith. The departure of arguably the most talented senior class in Miami-Dade County history, and an embarrassing spring game loss, have made the Bulls' passionate fan base a bit nervous.

The scoreboard read: North Miami Beach 25, Northwestern 0. The feeling didn't sink in even as the NMB players shook hands with the Bulls. It didn't sink in after they walked off the Traz Powell Stadium turf. For some players, it still hasn't.

  CENTRAL   KILLIAN

The Central football team hasn't had a problem matching talent with its rivals, yet the Rockets have missed the mark when it comes to winning a state title. To break the jinx, Central has turned to former Northwestern offensive coordinator Telly Lockett.

Somehow, Lamar Miller, the rising star once tabbed as the best running back in the country has seen his reputation slip a bit, not even considered to be the best running back in his district. And the school of his dreams appears as though its ready to pass on him.

  COLUMBUS   ANDRE C. FERNANDEZ

Another member of the Gore family says he's ready to break the Miami-Dade County rushing record. Columbus junior tailback Jakhari Gore will attempt to tackle the records his cousin, former University of Miami running back Frank Gore, set while at Coral Gables in 2000.

Miami-Dade high schools writer Andre C. Fernandez ranks this year's football squads from top to bottom.
