BROWARD COUNTY FOOTBALL
PERFECT ENDING

THE ST. THOMAS AQUINAS RAIDERS HAVE ONE GOAL FOR THE SEASON -DEFEND THEIR CLASS 5A STATE TITLE.

Speed, size, agility and versatility. The talent Broward County will be feeding major college football programs has plenty of these attributes again this year. Here is an in-depth look at 10 of The Miami Herald's top senior prospects who will strive for perfection during the 2008 season.

When last season ended, a strong case could have been made for Northwestern, Booker T. Washington and Pahokee all to be among the top five in the country. As we head toward the 2008 season, only two South Florida area teams are receiving national attention.

  DEERFIELD BEACH   CYPRESS BAY

Expectations at Deerfield Beach soar every year, especially after it advanced to its first state championship game in 2005. The hype was ratcheted up even further on the eve of the 2007 season, when the Bucks nearly defeated eventual 6A state champ Northwestern in the preseason.

When Mark Guandolo coached at Chaminade-Madonna, his players were outfitted in blue and white uniforms reminiscent of Penn State. While the uniforms remained at Chaminade when Guandolo switched to Cypress Bay in the spring of 2007, the tradition of great linebackers followed.

  MIRAMAR   NORTHEAST

Since his 2007 season ended in a first-round playoff defeat to North Miami Beach, Miramar quarterback Eugene Smith has tried to focus his attention on 2008 and his senior season. Smith wants to think about the Patriots' achievements despite relentless inquiries about his future.

Watching as a myriad of different college coaches and scouts walk through the hallways at Northeast is nothing new for students at the Oakland Park Fort Lauderdale school. But seeing the visitors for this year's prized Northeast recruit still causes some surprise.

  PINE CREST   BOB EMANUEL JR.

Unheralded as a sophomore entering spring football in 2007, Pine Crest quarterback Nick Becker was expected to provide a push for projected starter Zach Perlman. This year, Becker returns as Pine Crest's unquestioned offensive leader.
