Remember when advice books stayed on the shelves where they belonged? Me neither. The latest in what seems to be a trend to bring them to the screen, What to Expect When You’re Expecting used to be a popular guide for expectant mothers. Now, instead of explaining the month-by-month changes in fetal development and discussing the benefits of breastfeeding, it’s an excuse to throw together a bunch of attractive actors, tie their shallowly defined characters to a single concept — and, with any luck, watch the money roll in.

'True Grit' (PG-13)

The best way to approach Joel and Ethan Coen’s eagerly awaited True Grit is to lower your expectations, then lower them a bit more. The problem is not the movie, which is a terrific, no-nonsense, straightforward western. The surprise – or vague disappointment – is the prevailing lack of Coen-ness in the movie – the cynical, bemused irony, the weird little flourishes and curlicues at the edges of scenes, the resigned bleakness that usually courses beneath their best films (No Country For Old Men, Barton Fink, Miller’s Crossing, Blood Simple, The Man Who Wasn’t There).

'I Love You Phillip Morris' (R)

Steven Russell (Jim Carrey) yells at the paramedics tending to him after a car crash near the start of I Love You Phillip Morris, the likable but uneven comedy by writer-directors Glenn Ficara and John Requa (Bad Santa). Before that moment, Steven was leading a perfectly normal life, happily married to Debbie (Leslie Mann), a well-liked police officer and a devout churchgoer with lots of friends.

'Monsters' (R)

In Monsters, extraterrestrials have once again become permanent residents of our planet (like they were in District 9). Sequestered within a region of Mexico known as the "infected zone" and kept out of the United States by a giant fence along the border, the aliens, which resemble 10-story octopi who walk on their tentacles, continue to breed within their contained area and clash frequently with humans, who use military weaponry on them (like they did in King Kong or Godzilla).

'The King's Speech' (R)

Appropriately, the first thing we see in The King’s Speech is a microphone looming large. Then we slowly note its terrible effect on the man who must approach it: nervous hands shuffling papers; lips frantically repeating the words printed on them; finally, eyes revealing dread and a poignant sort of resignation.
