LAWLESS (R)
Lawless (R)
There’s a have-your-cake-and-eat-it quality about tales of outlaws at the end of their crooked road. We get the atavistic thrill of identifying with the powerful men committing murder, mayhem and violent robbery, then the pious satisfaction of seeing them punished for their sins.

Celeste and Jesse Forever (R)
Celeste and Jesse Forever (R)
Women really need to stop expecting anything from their husbands if they want to be happy. Or so Celeste and Jesse Forever tells us. A misguided romantic comedy about a divorcing couple who can’t quite manage to go their own ways, the movie actually insults its target audience by suggesting — no, insisting — that Celeste (Rashida Jones of Parks and Recreation) is a witch because she wants her manchild husband Jesse (Andy Samberg of SNL and That’s My Boy) to get up off the couch and get a job. She even says she wants the father of her children to own a car. These people live in Los Angeles. This is not an outrageous expectation.

PAUL WILLIAMS STILL ALIVE (PG-13)
Paul Williams Still Alive (PG-13)
In the ’70s, Paul Williams was everywhere. The diminutive songwriter (Evergreen, We’ve Only Just Begun, and many more) with the limp blond shag and tinted aviator glasses was a permanent fixture on television; a regular on game shows like The Gong Show and The Match Game and a frequent pop-in on TV series such as The Odd Couple, Police Woman, Baretta and The Love Boat. He was all over the talk shows, too, sometimes singing his songs in his slightly tinny voice, sometimes genially mocking his less-than-glamorous appearance. And then, suddenly, he was gone.

Total Recall (PG-13)
Total Recall (PG-13)
If humankind ever develops the technology to erase our memories, the way it does in Total Recall, I’ll happily pay to wipe out any number of errors in past judgment, including that Rush concert I went to and all the blue eye shadow I wore back in the ’80s. The technicians should also feel free to root through my hippocampus to eliminate any recollection of the last decade or so of Miami Dolphins drafts, and, while they’re at it, they can remove all traces of the reboot of Total Recall. Because there’s absolutely no reason to remember it.

Neil Young Journeys (PG) 1/2
‘Neil Young Journeys’ right into viewer’s faces in new concert film
Years ago Mick Jagger asked what could satisfy a fan’s insatiable need to know everything about the rock god up there on stage. “If I could stick my pen in my heart and spill it all over the stage, would it satisfy ya . . . ” he wondered in song.

TAKE THIS WALTZ (R)
Take This Waltz (R)
There is so much that is delicate and soft, so much that is hurtful and hard about love when filmmaker Sarah Polley gets her hands on it. She has done it yet again in Take This Waltz, which stars Michelle Williams, Luke Kirby and Seth Rogen in the story of the death of a marriage and the emotional dance that led to it.
