Miami FC hit rock bottom in a 9-0 drubbing Wednesday by the Carolina Railhawks at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., handing the club its worst loss in the team's four-year history.
First-half goals by Daniel Paladini, John Cunliffe, Andriy Budnyy, Gregory Richardson and Joseph Kabwe buried the Blues (7-13-4) and ensured their winless streak would reach seven matches.
Then things really fell apart. Kabwe added a two more goals in the second half and Sallieu Bundu had the final two.
``A 9-0 loss is totally unacceptable,'' Miami FC president Aaron Davidson said. ``It's embarrassing for Miami FC and it should be personally embarrassing for every single player on our team, and the coach.''
As for that coach, former World Cup champion Zinho, Davidson declined to say whether his job was safe, stating only, ``We'll review what transpired and make decisions appropriately.''
More than a month has past since Miami FC (7-13-4) last won a USL-1 match -- and more than the Blues' playoff hopes have tumbled in their 0-6-1 stretch. Since then, Diego Serna, the former Fusion standout who scored in each of the Blues' first two games, has been cut, as has forward Connally Edozien
Taking their place: Tristan Bowen, on loan from the L.A. Galaxy, and Nelson Pizarro, a Pembroke Pines product who spent time on the Kansas City Wizards' roster.
After his fast start, Serna was essentially a non-factor, scoring just once in his last 15 games with the Blues. But if that wasn't enough to fall out of Zinho's favor, Serna left the country earlier this month without telling the team.
Miami FC general manager Luiz Muzzi said Serna was not dismissed because of his truancy, saying Serna was released so he could deal with personal issues.
``He's a great player,'' Muzzi said. ``He was in as good of shape as anyone. He has the capability to be a leader. Unfortunately, it didn't work out in the second half of the season.''
Bowen, who was added in the last week, started at forward against the Railhawks (14-5-6), who clinched a playoff spot with the win.
