WATER -- OR NOT

As every South Floridian knows too well, sustainable use of water is more than an eco-topic -- it's an issue of lifestyle and even survival. In Spain, it's also the subject of the summer-long International Expo. More than 100 countries are mounting exhibitions in three signature buildings -- including one designed by architect Zaha Hadid. More than 4,000 performances are part of the fest; on the roster are Bob Dylan, the Israel Philharmonic conducted by Zubin Mehta, a play by Nobel Prize winner Dario Fo, a daily parade created by Cirque du Soleil and a late-night show. In the spirit of keeping green, 100 percent of the event's energy demand will be met by solar panels, wind parks and a hydrogen generation plant, say organizers.

Details: International Expo, Water and Sustainable Development, through Sept. 14. Adults tickets, about $54; three-day pass, about $109. www.expozaragoza2008.es; www.spain.info.

CALGARY'S WILD RIDE

Rodeo competitions, barrel races and other old-fashioned entertainment are all on the program at the Calgary Stampede, scheduled July 4-13 in Alberta. Musical performers will include James Taylor, Sugarland, the Judds and Kid Rock. Don't miss the chuckwagon races, in which wagons originally used to carry food and cooking equipment are raced around an obstacle course.

Details: Various tour packages are available including admission to other attractions and activities in the region. www.calgarystampede.com or 800-661-1767.

BILOXI, MISS.

HISTORY RESTORED

Closed since Hurricane Katrina, the retirement estate of Confederate President Jefferson Davis has reopened after a $4 million restoration. Murals dating from 1856 that were all but erased by flood waters are being painstakingly repainted. That restoration won't be completed for at least eight more months, but that didn't stop Beauvoir -- as the estate is named -- from celebrating its grand reopening June 3, the 200th anniversary of Davis' birth. The 2005 storm destroyed about 30 percent of the home; some outbuildings were a total loss.

Details: Beauvoir, the Jefferson Davis Home, 2244 Beach Blvd., Biloxi. www.beauvoir.org or 228-388-4400. Open daily 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission, $9.

ATLANTIC CITY

NO-GAMING HOTEL

The Water Club, a $400 million, 800-room hotel opening later this month, is missing something: a casino. Instead, it features five pools indoors and out (including an infinity pool in the spa that looks out on the Atlantic Ocean), lobby with tranquil cascade, upscale retail shops (including Just Cavalli and La Perla). Not to worry, there's plenty of gaming nearby; the hotel has the same developers as the Borgata.

Details: The Water Club, 1 Renaissance Way, Atlantic City; www.thewaterclubatborgata.com or 800-800-8817. Through June 30, introductory rates from $279.
