MARJIE LAMBERT'S POSTCARDS FROM THE U.S.A.
Postcard from Connecticut
Old Lyme, Conn., is memorable for me because it was the first time I stayed at a bed and breakfast inn, the Old Lyme Inn (www.oldlymeinn.com). My room in the New England-style farmhouse was lovely, trimmed with lace and furnished with a canopy four-poster bed so high that a step was required to climb into it. The inn's restaurant served a terrific dinner. The inn's staff and proprietors were gracious without being intrusive.
We were in Old Lyme to visit Callaway Cars (www.callawaycars.com), a company that takes a factory-made Corvette and turns it into a supercar, a supercharged monster that exceeds 600 horsepower.
But this town on the Connecticut River is known more for its art scene and its seasonal beach community -- it overlooks Long Island Sound -- than its fast cars.
Just down Lyme Street from the inn are four art institutions, including an artists'
cooperative and the Florence Griswold Museum (www.flogris.org), featuring American Impressionism. At the end of the 19th century, Florence Griswold opened her mansion to boarders. Among her boarders were artists who turned the town into a summer art colony -- and ultimately the mansion into a fine art museum.
This is one in a series of postcards by Marjie Lambert, assistant Travel editor, who has been to all 50 states.
