BAR SCENE: PROVIDENCIALES
Drinking it all in -- in the Turks and Caicos Islands
BY JENNY ADAMS
Special to The Miami Herald
There's nothing I hate worse than a super blue drink. It's unnatural. It's off-putting, and it usually tastes terrible. Landing in Providenciales, the most populated island in the Turks and Caicos, I was preparing myself for an onslaught of cobalt-colored cocktails and annoying paper umbrellas. What I found instead was a wonderfully diverse bar scene, where the only blue liquids were the sky-mirroring sea.
THE GANSEVOORT
There is no need to ever miss Miami when drinking in Providenciales, thanks to the new Gansevoort property. There's no need to miss a luxury cocktail experience either, thanks to the property's Bagatelle Bistro and beach bar. You can sip al fresco on floating platforms in the pool with bottle service ($145-$295) or lounge on their white couches with a single cocktail and a contingent of tan friends.
Try: The Pistol ($13.50): Patron tequila, muddled strawberries and mint with a splash of soda.
When to go: Monday nights. They float a giant television in the pool so you can swim and watch the game simultaneously.

DA CONCH SHACK
If you crave something a little more relaxed, don't pass by Da Conch Shack. Despite the somewhat gauche name, the shack gets serious with two local traditions. The first is rum punch, mixed tableside and ice cold. The second is fresh conch. Men pull the conch from small traps off the shore, chip the shell open with a hammer and pull the meaty morsel out in front of you. You can ask for conch ceviche or have the meat deep-fried in beer batter. Either way, it's delicious.
Try: Rayon's Famous Rum Punch ($28), serves six plastic cups worth; and the conch combo platter ($17), serves several preparations.

CLUB 2009
Finally, if you are looking to really live like the locals, head over to Club 2009 on Old Airport Road. Sporting a new name (it was previously Club 2005), this place goes all night. There's no A/C and the disco ball is a throwback to 1987, but there are two pool tables, a great DJ and a drink that, while hard to swallow, makes it easier to shake it til dawn. Called a Smiley Face ($5), it's a mixture of Hennessy and Red Bull.
When to go: Monday for Dominican Dance Night
