I arrived at the Balsams Grand Resort Hotel after a beautiful drive. I rounded a curve, and there was the resort spread out on 15,000 acres in the Great North Woods within a valley nestled in the White Mountains. The waters of Lake Gloriette shimmered invitingly.

Three young girls and their mom would join me later. Settling in, I checked out our accommodations. Three connecting rooms provided plenty of space for us all. Big, old-fashioned closets, tiny but adequate bathrooms and little touches like ornate vanity tables gave everything ''Grandma's best guestroom'' charm.

There was no television, and a Balsams employee later told me that this tradition continues at the express wish of returning guests who prefer being active by day and mingling with other guests at night.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the resort's first building was a small inn completed in 1866. The building was bought in 1895 by industrialist Henry Hale, who named it The Balsams and expanded it in an eclectic mix of architectural styles.

ACTIVITIES

In addition to a full range of outdoor activities on the lake, tennis courts and golf course, The Balsams offers hikes, movies, afternoon teas, nightly music programs and other events. Fly-fishing, almost-guaranteed-to-see-one moose safaris and other activities can be arranged. In winter the resort offers on-site snowshoeing, ice skating and skiing.

KID STUFF

Under the watchful eye of Camp Wind Whistle staff, children ages 5 to 10 weave baskets, watercolor, play games, and make collages from leaves, stones, flowers and acorns gathered on hikes nearby. Staff will also supervise campers, allowing parents free time for golf, hiking or a romantic dinner.

BOTTOM LINE

The Balsams is open year round except for the month of April. The following 2009 rates are for adults. Inquire about rates for children.

Getaway Package, including breakfast and dinner daily, $348 per person, double occupancy. Full American Plan (summer only), includes three meals daily plus seasonal activities, $214 per person, double occupancy. Packages are also available.
