From Henry VII to Woodstock, it's going to be a historic year
If you're looking to relive history in your travels, this year marks a variety of milestone anniversaries. Among them:
Woodstock: The Woodstock Music and Art Festival, which opened Aug. 15, 1969 on Max Yasgur's pasture in Bethel, N.Y., will be commemorated with a series of concerts and at the Museum at Bethel Woods.
The Bethel Woods Music Festival on Aug. 15 will feature a concert by the ''Heroes of Woodstock,'' including Jefferson Starship, Canned Heat, Ten Years After, Big Brother and the Holding Company and others. The same crew will perform at eight other concerts in the Northeast, Midwest and California; information at www.ticketmaster.com.
The Museum at Bethel Woods has interactive exhibits and vintage footage about Woodstock '69 as well as the legacy of the festival and the '60s and what they mean today (866-781-2922, www.bethelwoodscenter.org).
Felix Mendelssohn: In Leipzig, Germany, the Mendelssohn Festival Aug. 21-Sept. 18 celebrates the composer's 200th birthday (www.leipzig.de).
Frank Lloyd Wright: Marking the 50th anniversary of Wright's death, the Guggenheim Museum in Manhattan has a major exhibition of the architect's work, Frank Lloyd Wright: From Within Outward, through Aug. 23. The Guggenheim, which was designed by Wright, also marks the 50th anniversary of its opening this year.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park: America's most-visited national park, which straddles the border between North Carolina and Tennessee, marks its 75th year with a rededication ceremony at Newfound Gap on Sept. 2, the date President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the park in 1940 (865-436-1200; www.nps.gov/grsm).
Alaska statehood: Alaska became the 49th state on Jan. 3, 1959. Its celebratory events include an exhibit at the Anchorage Museum through Sept. 30, a reenactment of the 1959 flag-raising on July 4 in Juneau, and special events at the Independence Day Parade July 4 in Seward (www.gov.state.ak.us/ASCC/events.php).
Hawaii statehood: Less than a year later, on Aug. 21, Hawaii became the 50th state. Celebrations include a series of concerts showcasing American classical music since 1959, the Lanai Pineapple Festival July 4 and the Big Island Mango Festival Aug. 8 (808-586-0034; www.hawaii.gov/statehood).
Bermuda: The island celebrates the 400th anniversary of its settlement by the crew from the Sea Venture, a ship sent to rescue the settlers in Jamestown, Va., that wrecked off the coast of Bermuda. Events include a reenactment of the wreck July 8-11, tour of the wreck July 28, and the Christmas Boat Parade Dec. 12 (212-818-9800; www.bermudatourism.com).
Henry VIII: 500 years after Prince Henry assumed the throne, The Tower of London is staging a Dressed to Kill exhibition through Oct. 31 that displays the young Henry Tudor's armor and weapons (212-986-2266; www.visitBritain.com).
