FLORIDA

It's prime time to visit our natural wonders

Similar stories:

The rest of the nation may be shivering, but in Florida, even our coldest winter days are temperate.

For wildlife -- as for humans -- the Sunshine State is a refuge. Sandhill cranes, manatees, white pelicans, roseate spoonbills all come to Florida in winter. What isn't here: the swarms of mosquitoes that breed in standing water during the summer rainy season.

Add in balmy temps, and it's easy to see why this is prime time for visiting many of the state's parks and sanctuaries, including the following:

BAHIA HONDA

STATE PARK

Where: Bahia Honda Key in the Florida Keys, 12 miles south of Marathon on U.S. 1.

Details: With 492 acres, Bahia Honda boasts three sandy beaches -- some of the best in the Florida Keys. Shallow-water snorkeling and fishing from the beach, plus an abundance of wading and shore birds have earned this a national ''Best Beaches'' rating. 1-305-872-2353, www.floridastateparks.org/bahiahonda. Entry: car with one occupant, $3.50, with two $6. Boat ramp use, $10.

Prime Time: Weatherwise, winter and spring are the best -- but crowded -- times to visit; mosquitoes are virtually nonexistent.

How to see it: Drop by the park's Sand and Sea Nature Center, with a small marine aquarium, nature video and environmental activities. A nature trail leads to the top of the Old Bahia Honda Bridge, offering spectacular views. A self-guided Nature and History Quest walk at the west end of the island takes visitors through six learning stations. Rangers holds daily talks Monday-Friday. Snorkeling or kayak reservations: 1-305-872-3210.

Lodging: A campground plus six cabins ($136.30 each; 800-326-3521). The town of Marathon, 12 miles away, features many lodgings.

Tips: Boat ramps in the park, closed for renovation since Oct. 26, should reopen soon. Reservations for winter campground space and cabins must be made far in advance (11 months before is the maximum advance time).

BLUE SPRING

STATE PARK

Where: Along the St. Johns River in central Florida, near Orange City.

Details: This 2,643-acre park is a manatee hangout in winter; popular for water activities including boating, snorkeling and diving. 386- 775-3663, www.floridastateparks.org/bluespring. Entry: $5 per vehicle.

Prime time: From November to March, manatees flock to the 72-degree spring (181 were there on one recent day). To protect them, the park closes all water-related activities on the spring run.

How to see it: Nature cruises along the St. Johns River (386-917-0724), kayak and canoe rentals (386-775-6888). To see the manatees, hike along the boardwalk that borders the spring; a snack bar sits at the midpoint.

Lodging: Six air-conditioned cabins ($85), full-facility campground and primitive camp sites (800-326-3521). Nearby DeLand offers motels.

Tips: You'll see manatees most easily early in the morning on a cold winter day.

CORKSCREW SWAMP

SANCTUARY

Where: Northeast of Naples, about 15 miles east of Exit 111 on I-75.

Details: This 12,000-acre preserve is a winter bird nesting ground, has a butterfly garden and is home to a stand of massive, 700-year-old bald cypress trees. One of the oddest sights is the lettuce lakes, shallow bodies of water covered with green water lettuce. 239-348-9151, www.corkscrew.audubon.org. Entry: adults $10, ages 6-18, $4.

Prime time: December to April is nesting season for wood storks and wading birds; mosquitoes are minimal at this time.
