A thrill ride based on the Fast & Furious movies will be coming to Universal Studios in Orlando in 2017, taking the place of two attractions that will close later this year — Beetlejuice Graveyard Revue and Disaster: A Major Motion Picture Starring You!
The new ride, to be called Fast & Furious: Supercharged, will have an original story line, Universal Orlando said Tuesday when it announced the new ride.
Guests “will be immersed in the underground racing world made famous in the films, explore the headquarters of Toretto and his team and even get to check out some of the supercharged cars they’ve seen on the big screen. Then, guests will board specially designed vehicles and take off on an adrenaline-pumping ride with their favorite stars from the films,” a press release said.
Although it has the same name as a ride that opened in June at Universal Studios Hollywood, it won’t be the same ride, a Universal spokeswoman said. The California ride is the finale of that park’s signature studio tour. In Orlando, which doesn’t have a studio tour, the ride will be a standalone attraction.
Fast & Furious is Universal’s highest grossing film franchise of all time, and the new ride will feature its stars: Vin Diesel (Dom Toretto), Dwayne Johnson (Hobbs), Michelle Rodriguez (Letty) and Tyrese Gibson (Roman).
Fast & Furious: Supercharged is the latest development in a building boom at Universal Orlando’s two parks. Transformers: The Ride 3-D opened at Universal Studios in 2013, followed by the Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Diagon Alley in 2014. Skull Island: Reign of Kong is under construction at Islands of Adventure and scheduled to open next year.
To make room for the new ride, Disaster: A Major Motion Picture Starring You!, which opened in 2008 will close permanently on Sept. 8. Beetlejuice Graveyard Revue opened in 1992 and will also close this year, although a specific date was not announced.
