LOSING WEIGHT IN 2008

Gustavo and Marina Lumer, two of the six people we've been profiling monthly since January, have kept their resolution to lose weight. They've shed a combined 60 pounds so far by eating less. Their 10-month-old son Ian was an excuse for avoiding exercise, but not any more.
Terrence Thomas, owner of Expert Fitness Solutions in Hallandale Beach, gave the Lumers a fitness consultation last week, guiding them through a series of primal movements, which he says cavemen used for survival. His assessment of the Aventura couple:
Squat: Marina has good flexibility but lacks strength. The solution is fewer reps and more sets. Gustavo has good mobility and strength, but needs more consistency.
Lunge: The structural changes in Marina's hips and legs that occurred during childbirth made this movement difficult. Low repetition stair climbing, taking two steps at a time, will lead to improvement. Strength was not a problem for Gustavo, but he needs to perform flexibility exercises before doing strength exercise.
Bend: Marina's good flexibility worked in her favor. She was able to fold from the hips rather than bending from the waist, which is a common cause of back injury. Gustavo had trouble because of his lack of flexibility. He should focus on stretching his hamstring.
Push: The basic push-up was Marina's most difficult movement. Her upper body and core strength were not adequate. She can build strength by doing remedial push-ups on her knees. Gustavo had good strength and overall form but lacked the conditioning to do 20 reps. He needs to perform the movements more frequently.
Twist: Marina has good flexibility, but poor strength, which she can increase by creating tension in her muscles as she performs the movements. Gustavo has good strength and good range of motion.
In June, we'll provide another update on the Lumers as well as the other four people in this series -- Thelma Kirlew, Glenn Terry, Janet Carabelli and Dwaine Simpson.
