Youths to connect at MOCA Madness

lzilio@MiamiHerald.com

High school and college students across Miami-Dade County will come together Saturday and talk about art.

Culture Shock Miami, a nonprofit organization that sells discounted arts tickets to students ages 13 to 22, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami are hosting Culture Shock MOCA Madness.

The event will focus on the Convention exhibition, which features performances, workshops and video projects by 16 international and local artists. The artists will meet with the students and discuss the roles of conventions, festivals and other social and professional gatherings.

Part of the goal is to increase awareness about Culture Shock Miami, said Gerry Landreth, projects administrator for Culture Shock Miami. Student participation in the organization has increased since it was formed almost five years ago.

''We're starting to look at different ways to tap into the artistic community,'' he said.

MOCA Madness will cost $5 per student and includes lunch by Pollo Tropical, a scavenger hunt and a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum. Students can also purchase an additional ticket at the discounted price.

Adrienne von Lates, the curator of education at MOCA, said the event would focus on how people connect and convene.

''We are a tribal people,'' she said. ``We have a need to gather socially and connect.''
