Name: Bird's-nest anthurium Marie.

Botanical name: Anthurium X `Marie'.

Description: Hybridized by Miamian Steve Nock and named for his wife, Marie, this lovely anthurium has leaves that unfold green and gradually change to a deep maroon as they lengthen and widen. Marie Nock said she believes the hybrid has Anthurium schlechtendalii, a bird's-nest type found from Mexico to Costa Rica, as a parent. This is a superlative plant for lovers of dark leaves.

Height: leaves reach two to three feet.

Light: filtered morning sun, then shade.

Culture: Grow in a container in equal parts peat moss, Perlite and pine bark soil conditioner for excellent drainage but sufficient moisture retention. Slow-release 18-18-18. I also give my aroids a shot of water-soluble fertilizer (20-20-20 or CalMag 15-5-15) while I'm fertilizing orchids. And from time to time, on an irregular basis, I give the aroids and ferns some fish emulsion. Watch for snails, they love these leaves. Use a snail bait such as Deadline around the base of the container and lightly on top of the roots. A very few bits of the bait are sufficient to kill the snails; large quantities can kill pets.
