Hot peppers are one of several vegetables you can grow in countainers.
Q:To save money, I'd like to grow my own vegetables and herbs during the summer. What can I grow?
T.O., Hialeah
A: There are several crops you can grow: hot pepper, eggplant, okra, black-eyed peas, pigeon peas, rosemary, Cuban oregano, lemongrass and thyme.
If you have plenty of room, you can grow sweet potato and calabaza, a type of tropical squash. You could try growing the small fruited cherry-type tomato such as the Everglades tomato. Seeds and plants of this tomato may be difficult to find but it grows wild in agricultural areas of South Florida. You can also find sources on the web.
You can grow all of these plants, except for the sweet potato and calabaza, in containers on your patio or sunny balcony. The others are vines and need room to grow.
