When Toby Zack's customers buy a Flou bed, they get a ``system.''
The Italian design includes bed frame, headboard, mattress and linens and pillows crafted in stunning fabrics. But best of all, an optional feature is under-the-bed storage. Some even have built-in book shelves along the frame.
''This is so easy,'' explains Zack, a furniture and interior designer, as she lifts a strap from the bottom of a mattress and reveals the storage compartment. Clothing, bed linens, pillows and just about anything else can be stored in this space the size of the mattress.
Zack's showroom, The Toby Collection, is a most inviting place. A visitor wants to grab a book and curl up on one of the handsome beds with tall, upholstered headboards. The showroom, which features furniture for every room, includes Zack's own dining and occasional tables. But 1,000 square feet are devoted to Flou products, featuring 10 beds manufactured for U.S. sizes. Items ship in four to six weeks. There is also a selection of 70 to 80 beds available in 10 to 12 weeks.
At $3,000 to $12,000, the Flou bed system is an investment, but one that should last a lifetime. Among the company's claims:
The slats bed frame system, which accounts for 20 to 30 percent of body support, allows for individual firmness adjustment, eliminates hammock effect (unlike box springs) and squeaking.
The aluminum frame is fire-resistant, light-weight and made of an environmentally friendly material.
The storage base under the mattress recycles what is usually wasted space.
Headboards are self-supported and offer comfort when seated in bed for late-night TV viewing or reading.
The system is easily taken apart, which facilitates moving.
A variety of mattresses is available in the Flou system. Firmness varies according to model, from firmer to softer: Orthopedic, Pillow Top, Pocket Spring and Latex.
Linen sets include duvet cover, sheets and pillow cases. The duvet cover is made with an open end at the foot to tuck in underneath the mattress, which keeps the sheets in place while sleeping.
Another clever thing about this system is the ''flange'' on the throw pillows. The pillows have only three borders, which makes it possible to tuck the ''un-flanged'' side of the pillow into the mattress. No excuse for not making a tidy bed.
