An easy way to make a room sparkle and add drama is to accessorize with metallics. The shiny pieces can be striking, and because metals are considered neutrals, ranging from warm gold and brass to silver and nickel, they’re easy to introduce to any color scheme.

Gold and brass were the metals to showcase during the 1980s. That trend slowly faded, but gold has returned, sometimes in more subtle ways, as in lighting and decorative pieces, and sometimes not so subtle, as in stunning pieces of furniture. Gold is usually a popular choice for fall decorating as the warm glow carries into the winter holidays.

But seasons aside, there is a right tone for any home decor, whether the gold is bright and polished or soft and matte. Try complementing gold with other colors. Some popular choices are gold and black for a glamorous look or gold and ivory for classic elegance.

Remember that accessorizing with gold finishes isn’t limited to smaller items. Find a gold-trimmed table or gold upholstered chairs to create an eye-catching focal point.

Silver was the metal of choice until gold crept back in, but since silver creates a balanced contrast, it never fails to enchant because it highlights accent colors. Silver, nickel or pewter make for a sleek and modern update as opposed to gold’s warmer vintage.

Gold and silver can be mixed and matched as warmer metallics combine harmoniously with other metal finishes. Start with smaller amounts of gold and silver too see how the metallics play off each other. Make one metallic dominant and then add in a few accessories from the other metal.

In the right amounts, metallics can add glamor and sophistication to any room.
