Editor's Note | At least we're moving forward

A longtime friend of my father's died of AIDS in the early '80s.

He was a husband, a dad and a fellow teacher.

He died because he received a blood transfusion and the blood had not been tested for HIV (donated blood didn't undergo testing until 1985).

On Sunday, AIDS Walk Miami celebrates its 20th birthday. Yes, there are still too many new HIV cases -- particularly among a younger generation who didn't bear witness to AIDS' fury. But medical researchers have made great strides in developing drugs to contain the condition and people are clearly more educated.

Today's cover story by Desonta Holder looks at where we've been and where we're going.

It's a much richer portrait from a generation ago, although the wound still stings from those who have lost a loved one.
