Swine flu victim, 30, dies in Central Florida hospital
SANFORD -- (AP) -- A 30-year-old woman with swine flu has died, likely making her Florida's second swine flu fatality since the worldwide outbreak began in April.
The woman died early Tuesday at Florida Hospital in Altamonte Springs, a suburb of Orlando. She had checked into the hospital earlier this month and had been placed in isolation. Seminole County health officials confirmed last week that she had been infected by the H1N1 virus.
Health officials said they would not have an official confirmation on the cause of death until next week.
The woman had high-risk complications that made her especially vulnerable to the flu's effects.
Hospital officials would not say which complications she had, but, in general, high-risk factors include chronic heart problems, chronic lung problems, immune deficiencies, pregnancy and diabetes, Dr. Scott Brady, medical director of Florida Hospital Centra Care, told reporters Wednesday.
''This patient did have multiple conditions which would put her in the high-risk category for complications of the influenza,'' Brady said.
As of last week, Florida had 562 confirmed and probable cases of swine flu, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
