Beverage can't replace vitamins

Q:You've mentioned the importance of dietary supplements for healthy skin. Do vitamin-fortified beverages count?

A: We've all seen lots of ''enhanced waters'' pop up in grocery stores. If you're looking for an occasional treat, go for it -- it's better to get a few extra vitamins than none at all! But no, they are not a substitute for a good multivitamin. Furthermore, these products often contain high amounts of sugar, which is damaging to skin -- from the wrinkling caused by glycation to breakouts.

As the market for this type of beverage widens, though, intriguing new options are popping up: Coca-Cola recently launched Enviga, a sugar-free beverage that contains green tea, one of the most powerful antioxidants. The Borba product line features nutrient-fortified waters formulated for the skin. With no research into these products beyond in-house studies, I can't comment on their effectiveness. But my philosophy is that they can't hurt.

As far as skin is concerned, though, your best bet for drinkable nutrients are still ''water boosters.'' Typically packaged in dropper-style bottles, these products can be added to any beverage. My favorite boosters are Dr. Brandt Antioxidant Water Booster and Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Plantidote Mega-Mushroom Supplement.

I advise combining these products with a well-rounded diet, exercise, and a good multivitamin.
