Q. I’m contemplating getting my breasts done. Can you give me some information about what the procedure is like? Are there questions I should ask my surgeon and do you have any pointers for me?

Breast surgery is a very personal procedure. Before going over the logistical aspects of breast surgery, you should be doing it for the right reasons and for the right person, that is, you.

Having breast surgery for your boyfriend or girlfriend may ultimately lead to your dissatisfaction. Your surgery should be performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon at a hospital or an accredited facility.

Breast implants may be silicone, silicone gels or saline implants. Each has its own advantages. You should discuss which one “fits” you better with your surgeon.

Surgeons have their own preferences and biases. Therefore, seek a few opinions before making a definitive choice about who is going to do your surgery.

Some topics to discuss with your surgeon should include how your implant is going to be placed. Implants may be inserted either with a small incision around the nipple, endoscopically through the belly button or arm pit and finally through an incision under your breast. Another topic to discuss with your surgeon is whether your implant will be placed above or below your muscle. Most surgeons recommend placing the implant below your muscle, but like everything in medicine, there’s always an exception.

The most important thing for you to decide after you have discussed the above topics: Does your surgeon understand what you want? Does he or she know your motivation, size requirements and expectations?

It is important that your surgeon spend enough time with you and discuss and show you other patients’ results, with their consent, so that you will feel comfortable going into surgery.

Once all of these things have been achieved, it is likely that you will be pleased with your surgery.
