SPA SCENE

Surmé is an atypical spa

Surmé Beauty & Rejuvenation Center, 8519 SW 136th St., Miami; 305-252-6144; Surme.com

Lowdown: Surmé is atypical of spas.

With no lounging area or showers, this is not a place to hang out.

Nor is it a medical spa, a venue overseen by a health professional and which offers elective, invasive procedures.

The focus, says Surmé owner Janilla Khavari, is targeting problems using machines that employ ''chromotherapy'' (treatment with colored lights), microcurrents (mild electrical currents) and infrared application (invisible radiation wavelengths).

The spa has 10 treatment rooms. And while they ''might not be fancy, with marble,'' said Kharvari's husband, Farid, ``the things we do all get good results.''

Those results, the Khavaris say, run the gamut from curing psoriasis to improving cellulite, acne and sagging skin.

If more routine services are your thing, Surmé offers a full-service salon, traditional massage, hair removal and facials. The five pedicure stations are cleaned twice with bleach -- once, Janilla says, before your very eyes. No fungi here.

Neighborhood: Surmé is in a shopping plaza with OfficeMax across from the bustling Falls shopping center. Parking is freely available in the lot in front.

Vibe: Efficient and goal-oriented, despite the scented candles.

Highlights: While we cannot vouch for the efficacy of any of these services, here are some of the spa's offerings: Wholeness Cellulite Reduction & Detoxification series uses infrared and microcurrent combined with vibrations ($110 for one session, $990 for 10); Invigorating Rapid Body Sculpting series for any part of the body promises a 1-inch to 2.5-inch reduction after the first treatment, ($110 per session, $990 for 10).

Discounts for Miami Herald readers: Mention this story when you buy any service for $110 and get one of the following services free: lyphatic drainage ($110 value), oxygen treatment ($110 value) or chromotherapy ($65 value). Also, buy a series of 10 services, normally $990, for $750 ($240 value). Offers good until Nov. 8.
