``I was raised in consignment shops in Pasadena. I just got fascinated with St. John knits or Salvatore Ferragamo.

``The last time my mom tried to buy me clothes was at 12. I got mad at the clothes and she said, well, then buy your own clothes.

``I would go into Ross and steal a new outfit for the next day. I didn't have any money.

``Fashion was a way to stand out. Female birds are the dull birds. The male bird has to gussy himself up to get the chicks.

``My father's a minister. I was supposed to be a lawyer. I'm a musician.''
