With this season's makeup, we don't all need to look the same

kwexler@MiamiHerald.com

Unlike fashion, cosmetics don't lend themselves to unforgiving trends.

Silver eye shadow is hardly de rigueur these days, the way ombre purses are.

To be sure, advancements in makeup ingredients have rendered some older products obsolete. Foundations, for instance, have gone from cakey to mask-like to translucent.

And certain looks are definitely tied to specific decades: A thick black line on the upper lid screams 1960s; pixie freckles are so 1970s; liner on the inner, lower lid is all too 1980s; lined lips belong to the 1990s; and kissers drained of all color are entirely post-2000.

But women are more likely to follow their inner beauty-compasses than any claim that fuchsia-tinted blush is in. We tend to feel that the body is our creative tableau, while the face needs only simple beautification.

We know whether we look better in pink gloss or orange lipstick.

If you're looking to add to your makeup drawer this fall, here's what's hitting counters now, or soon.

You'll know instantly if it suits you.

Shiseido

Subdued is the operative word over at Shiseido. Shadows for fall are anchored in cool-ish browns with nearly natural lip colors, made over in gloss. Skin is matte.

The new Accentuating Color Stick, $32, used over foundation or on bare skin, offers a translucent highlight to the skin. Glosses in Polished Pearl and Mellow Gold, $20.50, are also surprising cool in tone. At counters now, and at Sephora and Sephora.com.

Organicare

This new, complete line of USDA certified organic skin care has numbered products so you needn't remember whether the Clarity Control AHA Serum, $45, is applied before or after Rescue Me ac¸ai berry serum, $95. The line arrives in September at Dillard's, select Nordstrom and other retailers.

Giorgio Armani

Smoky eyes and lips dabbed with a fine patina of color are the thing. To that end, there's the Python Palette, based on Armani's fall/winter fashion show, that includes three shades of gray. Two lips shades are also included: mauve and deep red, all for $100. The new Lip Wax, offers a matte, weightless dab of color, $26. Both at beauty counters later this month.

Lancme

The fall color collection is called Maharani Jewels, named for India, where Lancme recently opened shop. Poudre Elephant Teint is a new bronzer with an embossed elephant, $36.50. In the same collection is Le Crayon Khl Kajal, a super-soft liner with jojoba oil and organic beeswax, $23.50, at counters now.

Michael Kors

The designer's new shiny, patent accessories are the inspiration for a new fall lip shade, Bare Vinyl, $22. The shimmery gloss isn't entirely nude. On the other end of the stick is a vial of Kors' classic floral fragrance. At Sephora in September.

Laura Geller

Geller's latest offerings include two new shades of Eye Rimz, her compact eye liner that works both wet and dry, in peacock green Potion and deep purple Hocus Pocus. Each comes with a brush, $23, exclusively on QVC or at QVC.com.

Geller's new baked marble eye shadows have subtle streaks of color, and include Devil's Food, Mauve and Mint Licorice, $23 each, exclusively at Sephora later this month.

Annick Goutal

Four fragrances dubbed Les Orientalistes are Goutal's latest offerings: Amber, Myrrh, Frankincense and Musk, distilled and embellished. The unisex scents are easily combined. Available in September at Neiman Marcus, $175 each.

Tocca

Tocca introduces solid perfumes -- a counterpoint to its liquid fragrances, in Cleopatra, Stella and Florence, $30 each, at Sephora.

Hourglass Cosmetics

This Los Angeles-based company is already making waves, a mere year after its launch. Now carried in Barneys New York and Sephora, its newest product is Solar Tan, a self-tanning primer, a clear gel that promises a tawny tone in five to seven days without streaking. At Sephora, $60.

Sephora by Opi

If you care about color trends, this purple-gray tone is just right for fall. Here, Metro Chic, $9, exclusively at Sephora.

Trish McEvoy

The new Go Refillable Pen means that after popping in one of McEvoy's cylinders, you no longer have to apply foundation with your fingers. At counters now, $25.

Kiehl's

Its first new fragrance since 2004, Forest Rain Eau de Toilette, is a spicy, woodsy blend to evoke wet grass and jasmine. A body cleanser and lotion will also carry the scent. At counters in October, $38.50 for 1.7 oz., including Kiehl's second South Florida store, which opens in September at Aventura Mall.

Chantecaille

The Shadow and the Rose palette contains two shades for the eyes (mauve and purple-brown) and one for the cheeks (dusty peach), each embossed with Chantecaille's signature rose, $79. Le Stylo is a new liquid eyeliner that allows as fat or fine a line as you wish, $26, both at Neiman Marcus.

Prada

Count on Prada to come up with something new to attach to your purse, because somehow it's all about the purse -- isn't it? The Infusion d'Iris Parfum de Sac is a refillable key chain spray version of Prada's successful scent. At Neiman Marcus, $68 for .34 oz.
