FASHION SKETCHBOOK
Looking for useful -- but stylish, too

Do you know where I can find fashion-friendly waist bags?
Since I gave up using shoulder/handbags my back problem has improved tremendously. Also having my hands free when shopping is a great convenience.
But I can't find bags with an element of style. I do NOT want to wear nerdy fanny packs. Any suggestions on how to look like a stylish bag-lady?

Gucci gave fanny packs some dignity a few years ago with a logo version of the small belted purse. Today, we call them ''belt bags'' and everyone from Ed Hardy to Marc by Marc Jacobs to Akademiks makes them because frankly, they are terrifically useful.Check major department stores for the offerings, and for a great online sampling, go to Nextag.com and search for belt bags.
Re: Do-it-at-home manicures (The Nail Files, The Miami Herald, July 16)
I'm all for cutting back on expenses and I know most of us have to lately, but skipping manicures instead of lattes? I employ six great nail technicians that are hoping that readers don't take your advice. Manicures put food on their tables and shoes on their kids' feet.
In the days of financial stress I'd recommend the manicure over the latte. I don't think a double jolt of caffeine and a sugar rush is such a good idea when trying to cope with stress.
