COOK'S CORNER

Bake-Off faves you've saved?

lcicero@MiamiHerald.com

Flipping through Pillsbury's Best of the Bake-Off Collection (Wiley, $29.95), a re-release of the 1959 classic, I was struck by how many of the recipes from the first 10 years of the contest have become favorites. Who hasn't tried Hershey's Kiss-topped Peanut Blossom cookies, Orange Kiss Me Cake or Tunnel of Fudge?

It would be fun to hear from readers who have other favorites from the Bake-Off, now celebrating its 60th year. Write or e-mail me, and we'll see what other contest creations have earned a place in our recipe boxes. Meanwhile, I'm sharing a lesser-known winner that I was completely taken by, Chicken Cornbread Waffles.

Q: When I was in high school home-ec class nearly 30 years ago, our teacher handed out the recipe for what she called ``meet the in-laws'' chicken. She told us it was our ticket to putting a gourmet meal on the table. Its secret ingredients included a jar of apricot jam and a packet of dried onion soup mix.

A: I first encountered this recipe at a meeting of food editors, when we all passed around favorite recipes from readers. I was skeptical, but once I tried it I realized the appeal!

Q: I tried a recipe from you column for a Better than Sex pineapple yellow cake. It was fantastic and my men folk are asking for a remake. However, I can't find the recipe.

A: We've had several popular Better Than Sex recipes over the years. The most-requested is chocolate cake, but this one is a close second!

Q: Your mention of Maurice's on Collins Avenue in Miami Beach provoked my memory of Mitch's Steak House, which was almost next door. They served the most wonderful Caesar salad dressing. I know it's a long shot, but does anyone have the recipe for that dressing?
