COOK'S CORNER

Seeking sauce from Maurice's Steak House

lcicero@MiamiHerald.com

Q: You are my last hope. In the late 1940s and early 1950s there was a steak house on Collins Avenue and about 70th Street called Maurice's Steak House. They served a mustard sauce there that was out of this world. Over the years I have misplaced the recipe and am hoping you or one of your readers perhaps has a copy.

Gladys Oppenheim

A: Our recipe archive goes back only to 1982, so I could not find any information on Maurice's Steak House. Perhaps one of our readers can come to the rescue. In the meantime, here's the mustard steak sauce from The Place for Steak, a recipe we sought for decades and finally received last year.

COPYCAT CUISINE

Knowing how often Cook's Corner readers ask for recipes from restaurants -- both existing and long-gone -- I was particularly interested in a new cookbook, America's Most Wanted Recipes: Delicious Recipes from Your Family's Favorite Restaurants (Atria, $15), in which author Ron Douglas attempts to recreate familiar entrees.

The restaurants are all national chains (Chili's, The Cheesecake Factory, Olive Garden and the like). I tried the The Hard Rock Cafe pulled pork and found it a pretty pale imitation, but the Panda Express orange chicken, which you'll find here, is something I'd make again.

Q: Many years ago you had a recipe for finger paint. I made it with my daughter, and it was a huge hit. Now my daughter is coming to visit with my grandson, and I'd love to do this again.

Alice B.

A: This is one step up from making mud pies, but is a great summer activity. As I recall, my children and I painted ourselves as much as we painted sheets of shelf paper. I've got to admire your memory, as we printed this recipe 26 years ago!

SLEUTH'S CORNER

Q: I tried your recipe for Pennsylvania Dutch potato salad and it was truly good and worth the effort. Now I'm hoping you can help me find a recipe for a potato salad my Russian great-grandmother made. It had beets, peas, sometimes meat and I don't know what else. She called it oliveyeah, but it did not have olives.
