Flask philodendron grows in a spiral

Name: Flask philodendron
Botanical name: Philodendron martianum (mar-shee-AY-num)
Description: A beautiful, slow-growing plant that makes an attractive container specimen. The leaves are substantial and dark green. A central portion of the leaf stalk continues into the blade and tapers at its apex.
The stalk is spongy and, according to Deni Bown in Aroids, stores water to keep the leaf well hydrated. The fat stalks grow around a stem in a spiral, forming a loose rosette. The plant seems fairly unflappable in high or low temperatures as long as it is protected beneath a tree.
Height: 2 to 3 feet
Light: shade
Culture: A container mix that allows for drainage but retains moisture, such as peat moss, bark and sand, or the orchid mix called Aussie Gold would be appropriate for this philodendron. Water about three times a week, more or less, depending on heat, wind and rain. Water less often in winter. Use a slow-release fertilizer for foliage plants, such as Dynamite 13-13-13. To avoid mealybugs beneath the leaves, make sure air circulation is excellent.
