Florida: Conch Republic to Celebrate 32nd ‘Birthday’ April 18-27

Independence Day

It was 32 years ago next month that the Florida Keys declared “war” on the United States, skirmished with federal agents for a good 60 seconds and finally surrendered demanding $1 billion in foreign aid — which still hasn’t arrived. That’s OK. They’ll still be celebrating the founding of the Conch Republic, and visitors can expect more than a week of rebelry, er, revelry with tall ships, parades, parties and a musical production recounting the offbeat “nation’s” formation. Among the highlights, the the Great Conch Republic Drag Race (no, there will be no cars involved), the Conch Republic Red Ribbon Bed Race and the Conch Republic Naval Parade and Great Battle pitting water cannons against flying vegetables.
