The glowing skin seen on patients of South Florida-based dermatologist and alternative medicine expert Gary Goldfaden, M.D., speaks volumes about his skills, which are very much in demand at his Hollywood office. For him, beautiful, young-looking skin is all about a careful routine—particularly in summer, when the UV index climbs highest. Here, his tips (and one surprising trick) for summering in the tropics:
SPF 30 or higher, everyday: “Most people think that if they’ll only be in the sun for 20 minutes, they don’t need sun protection. But by the end of a month, that adds up to hours and hours of exposure. So slather on sunscreen even if it’s cloudy out. “You might think you’re protected, but the reality is that you’re still getting 80% of the sun’s radiation—you’re just not getting the heat.”
Tint your car glass: “The sun’s burning UVB rays might not make it through windows, but UVA rays do—and they’re the ones that cause aging.”
Opt for a physical sunscreen with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. “They have antioxidant properties, so they not only deflect up to 95% of UV rays, but also protect skin against damaging free radicals. My favorite is my own Goldfaden MD Sun Visor ($45, goldfadenmd.com): It’s an ultralight oil-free mist that turns invisible in 30 seconds and has SPF 30. I use it a couple of times a day before I go out.”

Squeeze carefully. “When you’re sitting outdoors, squeezing a lime or lemon into your iced tea or cocktail, be careful not to get the juice on your skin. Combined with sun, the oil in the rind can trigger blisters, red dots or age spots.”
