Within a mere decade, Miami Beach’s former Jewish quarter has become blanketed with elite high-rises and restaurants to serve their well-heeled residents. But thanks to natural amenities, like locals’ beaches and South Pointe Park, South of Fifth (“SoFi” in Miami parlance) also remains appealing to bohemians, surfers and yogis.
STARCHITECT STRUCK After Yabu Pushelberg’s Apogee and Philippe Starck’s Icon set the pace, pending residential developments are filling in the remaining gaps with more big names in design. Tapped for two boutique buildings, Enrique Norten, principal of TEN Arquitectos, and landscape architect Enzo Enea are behind One Ocean, the condominiums and villas that will feature site-specific works by artists José Bedia and Michele Oka Doner, and 321 Ocean, whose low glass structures flank a tranquil garden. Enea also lends his expertise to nearby Marea. Meanwile, local starchitect René González and landscape superstar Raymond Jungles oversee architecture and landscaping, respectively, at Glass, where floor-through homes will be topped by a three-story penthouse unit.
ATLANTIC ATTIRE Catering to sophisticated surfers, F1rst Surf Shop custom orders boards from the Channel Islands and sources edgier menswear brands, like Deus Ex Machina and Iron & Resin, that cross over into motorcycle culture. There are smaller assortments for women and kids such as Raen Cali sunglasses and rash guards, plus paddle board rentals. Many beach clubs like La Piaggia, whose decadent Sunday soirees naturally need the right resortwear, offer hidden boutiques. Nikki Beach’s recent renovation included bringing new brands to its shop, like Maaji, 6 Shore Road and Love Brand & Co.
POSH PLATES The season may be over for world-renowned Joe’s Stone Crab’s namesake delicacy, but there are plenty of new dining destinations. Prime 112 spawned Prime Fish at the former Nemo location, where the courtyard catches an ocean breeze, the perfect complement to Cantonese-style snapper and Hawaiian bigeye tuna poke. Italian cuisine goes haute with Cavalli Miami’s homemade pastas, which are served in a leopard-spotted setting, as well as Il Mulino’s signature papparadelle pomodoro at its second Miami location. Bar Crudo’s Sunday brunch pours strawberry mimosas to wash down sous vide pork loin sandwiches with truffled egg.
