VITALS Born in New York and raised in Miami Beach, where she graduated from Miami Beach Senior High before heading to the University of Florida. Married Michael, a retired homicide detective who currently works as a state law enforcement agent. They have 17-year-old twin daughters, Francesca and Marti.
CURRENT JOB Executive director for Swimwear Association of Florida, which organizes SwimShow & Lingerie Show, the largest, annual tradeshow for swimwear, resort wear and lingerie. Like Art Basel, the main event at the Miami Beach Convention Center in July has spawned several satellite trade and runway shows, resulting in Miami swim week.
FIRST PAYING JOB “I had loads of fun summer jobs, but my first real job was as copywriter for Jordan Marsh department store.”
AS A KID, YOU WANTED TO BE “I always wanted to right the wrongs and save the world by making it a better place. Even though that wasn’t exactly my life’s path, I try to do the right thing and treat people fairly.”
MOMENT YOU KNEW YOU MADE IT “During the abysmal economy, I was so worried SwimShow wasn’t going to get exhibitors. Not only did they come, but we sold out with more than ever. I like to think that I can take some credit for the show’s success in both times of prosperity and adversity. I’ve devoted over 15 years to making this show bigger and better every year, and when it’s successful, I take that as a point of personal success."
WHAT YOU VALUE MOST ABOUT MIAMI “I love the energy and vitality. You can’t beat its beautiful weather, multicultural smorgasbord of people, and fantastic restaurants and nightlife. Miami is an amazing place to raise a family and, luckily, it’s the perfect place for SwimShow.”
BEST ADVICE EVER RECEIVED “When I was in college and struggling to decide which path I wanted to take, a professor said to be true to myself and follow my gut. I hold to that advice every time I need to make a big decision, and it works!”
GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT “My smart, talented and generous daughters, Francesca and Marti, who are growing up to be exceptional women. I’m so proud to be their mother.”
GREATEST EXTRAVAGANCE “Time off! People think that organizing SwimShow is an easy job that only takes a few months. They don’t understand that it takes a lot of time and effort to put on the top quality production that we’re known for. There’s a reason it’s the largest and longest-lasting swimwear trade show."
LAST TIME YOU DID SOMETHING FOR THE FIRST TIME “I lead a pretty regular life so I’m not going skydiving on a whim. But I do love the occasional fashion splurge. I recently purchased my first Celine bag, which hopefully won’t be my last!”
SOMETHING PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU “I’m an avid health nut. I’ve been a vegetarian since college and a vegan since my girls were born. I work out daily through running, spinning and lifting weights.”
TOUGHEST PART OF YOUR JOB “Saying no to emerging swim brands that aren’t ready to be in the show. It’s hard because they are anxious to exhibit and launch their businesses. I want to help them as much as I can since new brands bring excitement to the industry, but I have to do what’s right for the show. I encourage them to reapply.”
UNWINDING AFTER THE SHOW “As soon as the show is broken down, I check out of my hotel, shut off my phone and head home to relax with my family and sleep in my own bed. My daughters help with the show, but I don’t see my husband for almost two weeks!”
INDISPENSABLE POOL WEAR “A lot of SPF—I could never single out just one of my brands as a favorite!”
