Doretha J. Parker was sound asleep when she was rattled awake by multiple shots within steps of her home Wednesday morning.
“I heard 10 or 12 shots and hit the ground,” said Parker, 83.
Authorities said a passenger in a car near Parker’s home was killed after the vehicle was sprayed with gunfire.
A second victim was also shot but managed get out of the bullet-riddled green Saturn, knock on a neighbor’s house, and ask for help. Parker said that victim was a young woman who was transported to a hospital. It’s not known which hospital the victim was in.
The shooting happened before sunrise near the corner of Northwest 22nd Court and 141st Street in Opa-locka.
Parker, who said she has lived on Northwest 22nd Court so long that part of the street is named after her, quickly dialed 911.
About seven Opa-locka police cars showed up at the scene. Officers ordered neighbors to stay inside their homes. The body was removed from the car at about 7:30 a.m., Parker said.
“I’ve been around for 63 years and I’ve seen a lot of shootings,” she said. “This is the worst.”
The identities of the victims have not been released.
