If your kids like to make crafts, and you don’t have a crafty gene in your body, we’re got a tip for you. My mom still sews at 81-years-old and my twins are interested in learning how to sew. I am lucky if I can sew on a button. Thankfully a number of chain stores run regular free craft workshops for kids, all materials included.
Here are places to find free hands-on craft workshops for kids in South Florida:
• Home Depot. The hardware chain has free kids’ workshops from 9 a.m. to noon the first Saturday of every month. The kids get to keep what they make, plus they get an orange apron, a pin and a certificate. On Saturday, March 2, kids will build a race car.
Never miss a local story.
Lego stores host a freeMini-Model Build
at 5 p.m. the first Tuesday of every month for children 6 to 14. The project for Tuesday, March 5, is a sea turtle.
Thefree kids’ clinics
at Lowe’s are twice a month, and the schedule varies. These require advance registration, and we found all the Miami-Dade and Broward spots filled for the March 9 clinic. At 10 a.m. March 23, the youngsters will make a “piranhakeet chomper” inspired by the film “The Croods.” Kids get to keep their creations, as well as an apron, goggles and a patch.
The kids’ club at Michaels offers30-minute craft sessions
for $2 per child as well as occasional free family craft events. The next free event is 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 16, when participants will make a Crayola Magic Model Duck. Michaels also offers free and cheap craft workshops for adults, some of which are suitable for older children.
Sometimes a local store will change the schedule of an event, so it’s always good to call your local store to verify that it is keeping to the schedule published on the national website.
Several South Florida museums schedule periodic free crafts classes for kids and families, including the Bass Museum of Art and the Miami Art Museum. Some library branches in Miami-Dade and Broward also organize free craft activities. Check the Miami-Dade calendar here and the Broward calendar here.
