An off-duty Sweetwater police officer was killed on Sunday in a motorcycle accident and strong winds from Hurricane Sandy may have been a factor, the city has announced.
Officer Bryan Marrero, 22, died in a crash that occurred at around 11:15 a.m. on the southbound lanes of Interstate I-75 between Miami Gardens Drive and the Northwest 154th Street exit.
Marrero’s motorcycle struck a guard rail and he was thrown from this personal bike, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The accident occurred as Marrero was southbound on I-75, approaching the exit overpass in the inside center lane. The officer changed into the inside lane and for some reason began to drift onto the inside emergency shoulder.

He lost control of his 2009 Yamaha R6 and careened off the shoulder and into the grassy median. He then traveled back onto the inside emergency shoulder and collided into the guardrail.
Marrero was thrown from the bike and landed in the left lane of SB I-75, under the 54 Street overpass. His bike continued rolling for another 1,200-feet, FHP said.
Marrero was dead on the scene. He was wearing a safety helmet and jacket.
No other motor vehicle was involved, FHP said.
The city of Sweetwater issued a news release indicating strong winds may have played a role in the fatal accident. But FHP said the exact cause of this crash is still under investigation.
Marrero was a two-year officer with Sweetwater, the city said.
