A police pursuit Tuesday in West Miami-Dade County ended with one man in custody and multiple lanes of the Palmetto Expressway shut down for hours.
The Florida Department of Transportation said all northbound lanes of the Palmetto, also known as State Road 826, were shut down for hours near the Dolphin Expressway. Traffic also was slowed down in the southbound lanes in that area.
Miami-Dade police said it began with Robbery Intervention Detail detectives pursuing a person on surface streets Tuesday night. The driver was suspected in an armed carjacking that had happened earlier Tuesday.
The driver got onto the Palmetto, going southbound in the northbound lanes, police said, but only made it a few blocks before crashing into other vehicles.
The suspect got out of his vehicle and tried to run away but was caught by police. He was treated by firefighters for a bite from a canine.
As of 10:30 p.m., the northbound Palmetto lanes had reopened.
