Police have arrested a man who they say shot at officers and led them on a wild chase through Hialeah and Miami on Sunday night.
Osmani Ojeda, 22, is charged with several counts of trying to kill a police officer, fleeing from the cops and resisting an officer with violence, according to Miami-Dade Corrections records.
According to police:
It all started Sunday night when Hialeah Police were investigating a shooting at The Crossway Motel, located at 1775 W. Okeechobee Rd., that left two people with gunshot wounds.
“We’re there investing the shooting at a motel and a passing car shoots at police, like a drive-by type thing,” said Hialeah Police spokesman Carl Zogby.
The shooter sped away in an older-model Chevy Capri, taking off down Okeechobee Road, hopping on the 112 Expressway and eventually getting off on Miami Avenue. Hialeah police followed all the way. Two cop cruisers were left riddled with bullet holes in their windshields and hoods, and even inside one car, Zogby said.
“No one was hurt on the police end. We don’t think any of the suspects were hurt,” he said.
The bad guys — how many, is still unknown — dumped the car at Northwest Sixth Avenue and 45th Street in Miami. They ran into the residential neighborhood there, and hid.
Police from several departments, including Miami Beach, set up an eight-block perimeter and eventually found Ojeda hiding in a nearby shed.
More arrests may be coming.
“This is still a very open case that we’re working very actively because we certainly are not going to stop at one arrest until we are absolutely sure that we have all those involved in custody,” Zogby said.
