Day 5 of University of Miami’s fall football camp underscored what Hurricanes fans and college football experts have known all along: freshman Tracy Howard is a talent with which to be reckoned.
Howard, the top high school cornerback in the nation out of Miramar High School, was wearing a coveted black jersey Tuesday during practice. The black jerseys are worn by first-team players — considered the best and the brightest.
Senior cornerback Brandon McGee, who was previously wearing a black jersey, is not wearing black anymore.
UM freshmen are not permitted to speak to reporters until after they play in their first game. But here’s a comment Howard made on National Signing Day in February after choosing UM over the Florida Gators — when asked if he believes he’ll start in his first game as a Hurricane:
Never miss a local story.
“I’m not really a guy who is going to talk and say I’m going to start,” Howard said. “It’s up to me to produce.
“Do I feel like I’m going to produce and show out, compete and work hard? Yes. I do. If I do that I’m going to start. I feel like I’m going to go in there, work hard.
“Do I feel I’m the best? Yes, I feel I’m the best. Even if there’s a senior in front of me, this is about business. I’m going in there working. I’m going in there hungry. I want everybody to know that.
“ I can’t tell you I’m going to be starting, but that’s what I really want to say. I want to say you’ll see me starting opening game. But I’m a humble guy. And I feel like if I handle business the way I have throughout my life, then why not? I did great on the optimist level. I did great on the high school level. So why would I not succeed on the college level?”
NO CONTACT FOR ‘DUKE’
Another five-star freshman, running back Randy “Duke” Johnson out of Miami Norland High, was in a red no-contact jersey Tuesday. Johnson, who still participated in drills, suffers from occasional migraines, and got a whopper a couple days ago. He was feeling a lot better Tuesday, but UM coaches were being cautious by keeping him in the red jersey, a source familiar with the situation said. Doctors are aware of the situation.
