There will now be "threaded replies," which will allow individuals to reply to specific comments. (Currently the only way to reply to someone's post is to copy their comment, make a new post and paste in their note. Now replies will post directly beneath the original comment.)
The functionality for flagging offensive comments and recommending good comments will exist as before. If you want a comment brought to a moderator's attention for review, click the "Flag" button in the lower-left.
Never miss a local story.
In addition to logging in to post from your MiamiHerald.com account, you can now comment by logging in with your Disqus, Facebook or Twitter account.
You will have the option of subscribing by email to a comment thread by clicking the “Subscribe by email” button at the bottom of the comment box. New comments will be sent directly to your email inbox, where you may read and respond by email.
If you are logged in using your Facebook account, you will be able to share your comments on specific articles to your Facebook profile page, by clicking the Share on Facebook link directly beneath the comment box. This is a per-post selection, so each time you comment on an article or reply to another comment, you will need to indicate your interest in sharing the post to Facebook.
You will be able to subscribe via RSS to a comment thread by clicking the “Subscribe by RSS” button at the bottom of the comment box. This link will include step-by-step instructions on how to set up the RSS subscription.
You will no longer have a personalized profile page. Disqus does not offer this feature.
Creating an avatar:
You will not have to re-register or create a new account on MiamiHerald.com to comment on the new system. Your account will remain active. HOWEVER if you want to keep your avatar (the icon attached to your comment) you will have to upload a new avatar to your new account using the service Gravatar.
Gravatar is a web site that allows you to attach an avatar to any account on the Internet based on the e-mail address you use for accounts.
For example, if you have signed on to MiamiHerald.com with the e-mail "email@example.com," register that e-mail with Gravatar, upload your icon to that Gravatar account, and you will then have the icon show up next to your posts on MiamiHerald.com. With the exception of your e-mail address (and a password), you do not have provide Gravatar with any other personal information.
If you were logged on before the change, you may need to log off (both at the top of the page below "The Miami Herald" header and at the bottom of the story), then log back on at the TOP of the page. You should now be able to scroll down and comment successfully.
You may also need to make sure your browser accepts third-party cookies. The default settings for most browsers do, but if you need to check, there's instructions here on how to do this.
Using Internet Explorer 9? Try turning on IE9's compatibility mode for MiamiHerald.com. This is a per-site setting. Instructions can be found here (or if compatibility mode is turned on, turn it off).
