Fredric Brandt first began creating skin care products more than a decade ago to target specific skin care problems. His eponymous lines augment his cosmetic dermatology practices, in which he arms himself with injectables and other methods to help turn back the clock. Considering himself an artist as well as a physician, he says he is the largest user of Botox and injectables in the world.
First opening an office in South Florida in the early 1980s, Brandt currently splits his time between his practices in Coral Gables and New York City. He also has been enlisted by pharmaceutical companies to conduct FDA-approved clinical trials for a variety of products at his Dermatology Research Institute at 4425 Ponce De Leon Blvd.
We spoke to Brandt on the phone and emailed him these questions:
Never miss a local story.
Q. You have just launched two new lines of anti-aging skin care products. Can you tell me about the lines and describe each product?
I recently launched two new lines called "do not age" (DNA) and "xtend your youth" (XYY).
My new "do not age" (DNA) line of anti-aging products truly represents the next frontier of anti-aging. These new breakthrough formulas not only reverse existing signs of aging, but also prevent future aging by teaching skin to act young at the cellular level.
The new line consists of the DNA Transforming Pearl Serum, which was formulated to jumpstart skin's metabolism and restore strength and vitality; the DNA Time Reversing Cream which helps restore skin's architecture, addressing and reversing sagging skin and loss of volume, elasticity, density and wrinkles; the DNA Triple Peptide Eye Cream, which helps restore and replenish moisture while reducing puffiness and fading dark circles (also diminishes lines and wrinkles); and the DNA Firming Neck Cream, which infuses skin with potent active ingredients via an advanced delivery system to directly target problem areas to repair and restore skin's structure.
My XYY line employs an exclusive combination of nature and technology to fight stress and aging due to free radicals and external aggressors. Each product in the collection provides powerful antioxidant protection, defends skin cells against oxidative stress and inflammation, and protects against moisture loss to keep skin young and healthy.
The collection consists of the XYY Dual Fusion Water, an antioxidant-packed cleansing water for face and eyes that gently and effectively removes all impurities and makeup (even waterproof formulas), trapping oil and residue in micelles (tiny molecules). Unlike standard water, the XYY Dual Fusion Water formula won't disturb the pH balance of the skin and will protect it from inflammation caused by environmental stressors and inhibit bacterial reactions.
The XYY Face Cream is an anti-aging formula that provides 12-hour protection from free radicals and external aggressors, unveiling a luminous, healthy and youthful complexion. My XYY Eye Cream is an antioxidant eye cream that protects, hydrates and smoothes the eye contour, providing 12 hours of protection from free radicals while smoothing fine lines and moisturizing.Q. How are the products formulated?
The "do not age" transforming pearl serum and time-reversing cream employ an exclusive skin transforming system, the Juvenescence + Complex, which is comprised of the following active ingredients: algae extract, biomimetic tri amino acids peptide, and flaxseed extract. The algae extract (named Alaria) grows in an exclusive ecosystem located in the Brehat archipelago in France. This ingredient acts as an ATP booster to optimize cellular respiration while fueling the cells with vital energy. The biomimetic tri amino acids peptide inhibits the production of progerins (cell aging markers/mutated proteins that accelerate entry in senescence of the cells) and reinforces skin architecture. The flaxseed extract remodels and re-contours skin's structure and jaw line volume and restores volume.
The DNA triple peptide eye cream is powered by my exclusive triple peptide complex, consisting of palmitoyl oligopeptides, Argirilene and Vitamin C polypeptide, which stimulates collagen and elastin.
The DNA firming neck cream consists of my platinum peptide technology, which is a highly effective platinum delivery system that works like skin's own GPS, delivering nano-particles to provide direct contact with targeted problem areas to repair and restore skin's structure. It also consists of sorghum juice, which tightens and smoothes the skin instantly for immediate lifting action as well as glycolic acid, which stimulates cell turnover.
The XYY dual fusion water consists of micelles, which are tiny particles that effectively eat up and absorb dirt and makeup, cleansing and purifying. It also contains lotus extract, which removes impurities and residue of pollution, as well as red rose wine (an antioxidant) to protect skin from inside and outside stress, inhibit oxidation and protect from collagen degradation.
The XYY face cream and eye cream both consist of an antioxidant tri-blend (made up of green tea, white tea, grape seed), which is extracted through a new, innovative and exclusive extraction process, providing 900 percent more potent antioxidant protection (compared to commercial teas) and 12 hours' protection against free radicals and skin aggressors. They both also contain red rose wine to minimize stress and inflammation as well as prevent degradation of collagen fibers.Q. Where are the products sold in South Florida and elsewhere? What is the price range?
They are sold at Sephora, sephora.com, drbrandtskincare.com, as well as in 40 other countries outside the United States. The price range is $65-$150.Q. What led you to create your own skin care products, and when did you first enter that business?
When I started in 2000, I first entered this arena because I thought there was a lack of skin care products that targeted people-specific skin care problems, and I wanted a more targeted approach to skin care with products that targeted individual skin care concerns.Q. You are also known for injectables. Please tell me about that part of your practice.
I am the largest user of Botox and injectable fillers in the world and a well-known lecturer and innovator in the field on using all types of injectables. I developed the Botox neck lift in the mid-'90s as well as many techniques using injectable fillers. This occupies the majority of my time in my medical office.Q. You spend about half your time in South Florida, at your Coral Gables office. When did you first start to practice in Miami?
I first started in Miami in the '80s and expanded my practice to New York in the mid-'90s. Q. Please tell me more about your Coral Gables office, about the staff, the research you do and how the practice is different from your office in New York.
My Miami practice consists of two entities: the dermatological research institute, where we perform numerous studies for companies seeking FDA approval for fillers such as Restylane in the past, as well as new fillers coming on market, such as Teosyl, as well as new forms of Botox.
We also have the latest equipment to non-invasively measure skin, hydration, pores, elasticity and collagen as well as a group of the finest dermatologists performing research and seeing patients on a daily basis.
In our clinical practice, we have dermatologic specialists who lecture and publish on the use of lasers and other medical devices and perform all other aspects of cosmetic dermatology as well as specialists in most micrographic surgery. We offer a full spectrum of dermatological care, both medical and aesthetic.Q. You also have a radio show. Can you tell me about that?
My radio show has been a resounding success on Sirius XM 106 every Saturday at 1 p.m. as well as repeated throughout the week, and aims to help listeners look and feel their best. Topics include skin damage, the truth about Botox, fillers, injectables, laser treatments, home vs. office procedures and more, and we are inundated with callers from all over the United States and Canada who are seeking dermatology advice. We often have special guests including influencers, editors and celebrities who come on and share their skin/cosmetic experiences.Q. What is next for you?
Continuing research in dermatology and always trying to take things to the next level and improve on existing techniques as well as creating new ones.
