New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - FC Dallas forward Tesho Akindele was named the Player of the Week on Monday for Week 23 of the 2014 Major League Soccer season.
Akindele netted his first hat trick in a 5-0 road victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, keeping FCD in the top three in the Western Conference and just three points back of leaders Real Salt Lake.
With Dallas leading 1-0, Akindele scored his first goal in the 43rd minute after collecting a pass from Fabian Castillo and firing a shot off the post and into the net.
Castillo had a hand in Akindele's second goal as well when his shot was saved by goalkeeper Jon Busch, who fumbled the ball and left Akindele with an easy rebound goal.
Three minutes from time Akindele completed his hat trick with another rebound goal as Busch kept out a header from Blas Perez, only for Akindele to smack home the loose ball to cap a memorable evening for the rookie.
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from the North America Soccer Reporters (NASR). The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
