John McCain is heading to Mississippi, hoping to give a last-minute boost to old friend Thad Cochran.
McCain, who has served in the Senate since 1987, is the latest celebrity politician to campaign in Mississippi’s Republican Senate runoff. Former Sen. Rick Santorum appeared at a rally Thursday for challenger Chris McDaniel, who’s also been aided by 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and former Texas Rep. Ron Paul.
Cochran, a six-term veteran fighting to hold onto his seat, has his own roster of big names, notably former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre.
McCain will lead a rally Sunday evening at the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport. On Monday, the day before the election, he’ll appear at an 8:45 p.m. rally at the Mississippi War Memorial Building in downtown Jackson.
McCain won Mississippi by 13 percentage points when he ran for president in 2008. He is also expected to help encourage the state’s sizeable veteran population to turn out.
