Manaus, Croatia (SportsNetwork.com) - Italy goalkeeper and captain Gianluigi Buffon has been ruled out of the nation's Group D clash with England on Saturday due to an ankle injury.
The Juventus veteran picked up a knock in training but was hopeful of suiting up for Italy's opening match, but he was not able to recover in time.
Buffon, 36, is Italy's all-time leader in appearances with 140 caps.
Paris Saint-Germain's Salvatore Sirigu is expected to start for the Azzurri.
