With the crisis in Ukraine intensifying, President Obama today invited his counterparts from the seven largest industrialized countries to a meeting next week on the margins of a Nuclear Security Summit Obama will attend at The Hague.
The White House says Obama extended the invite to leaders of the G-7: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the European Union.
The G-7 members had already agreed to suspend preparations for the G-8 Summit in Sochi, Russia, as a rebuke to Russian President Vladimir Putin for his intervention in Crimea and National Security spokesperson Caitlin Hayden said the meeting will “focus on the situation in Ukraine and further steps that the G-7 may take to respond to developments and to support Ukraine.”
Obama is scheduled to attend the meeting Monday and Tuesday.
